Where Has Dan Patrick Been?

Yesterday Tea Party Republican nominee for Lt. Governor Dan Patrick hosted his first public event in more than a month. Before disappearing, Patrick was being pounded for his divisive anti-Hispanic rhetoric.

Yesterday Tea Party Republican nominee for Lt. Governor Dan Patrick hosted his first public event in more than a month. Before disappearing, Patrick was being pounded for his divisive anti-Hispanic rhetoric. Here are just a few examples of Patrick’s vitriol:

  • Patrick claimed that children crossing the Texas border were bringing third world diseases into the United States such as: “tuberculosis, malaria, polio and leprosy.” [Texas Observer, 2/24/2006]

  • Patrick slammed the Texas Dream Act: At a debate with former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, Patrick said that, if elected, he will lead the fight against in-state tuition for DREAMers: “I will lead to repeal in-state tuition. I will repeal it instantly, absolutely” [Castro-Patrick Debate, 4/15/2014 38:59-38:57]

  • Patrick called Hispanic immigration an “invasion” repeatedly: “The number one problem we are facing,” he tells audiences, “is the silent invasion of the border. We are being overrun. It is imperiling our safety.” [Texas Observer, 2/24/2006]

  • Patrick distributed anti-Hispanic campaign signs: At his last public appearance, Patrick again endorsed mean-spirited sentiments and drew harsh criticism for handing out campaign signs shaped as fences, reading: “Secure Our Border.”

Dan Patrick knows he is out of step with fair-minded, mainstream Texans. He knows that his ugly, divisive rhetoric alienates voters.

So how did he cope with the criticism? Patrick turned tail and ran, hiding out for more than a month.

Where has Dan Patrick been for the past month? Is he ready now to publicly disavow his hateful statements and those of his key backers?

Did Dan Patrick take a break from his campaign to rethink this hateful rhetoric? Or did he just become overwhelmed by the pressure and criticism and need to escape?

Regardless, Texans deserve more from Dan Patrick.

They deserve straight answers on where he stands—and where he’s been.
