Will Konni Burton Condemn Law-Breaking Tea Party AG Candidate Ken Paxton?

This Saturday, Konni Burton, Republican Tea Party candidate for Senate District 10 will appear at a public event with embattled GOP Attorney General candidate and admitted criminal Ken Paxton.

Fort Worth, TX— This Saturday, Konni Burton, Republican Tea Party candidate for Senate District 10 will appear at a public event with embattled GOP Attorney General candidate and admitted criminal Ken Paxton.

This event offers a chance for both candidates to answer questions about whether a confessed criminal has any business making a bid to be the highest law enforcement official in Texas.

Paxton has faced heated criticism—from both Republicans and Democrats—after admitting he had violated state securities law and being forced to pay a large fine for failure to register after soliciting investment clients.

Last month the Lone Star Project learned that allies of Texas House Speaker Joe Strauss appear to be urging the Travis County District Attorney to prosecute Paxton. If Paxton is prosecuted and ultimately convicted for felony security law violations, he will be disqualified from serving as Texas Attorney General—clearing the way for establishment Republicans to replace him with a handpicked candidate.

Despite mounting questions about his candidacy, Ken Paxton—and his allies—have avoided giving answers at every turn.

  • In late April, Paxton canceled an appearance at a friendly Tea Party group in Tarrant County as news broke of his security violation.
  • At that same canceled appearance, GOP primary opponent Dan Branch raised questions about Paxton’s ability to serve as state Attorney General:
    • “Branch said the story raised troubling questions about Paxton’s ability to lead as attorney general, a position where duties include determining how transparent state and local governments should be under the state’s open records laws.” [Texas Tribune, 4/21/2014]

Texans deserve the truth from Paxton and an explanation from Konni Burton.

It’s long past time for Paxton – and Tea Party allies like Konni Burton – to answer questions about Paxton’s candidacy and his crimes.

This Saturday, Ken and Konni need to have the courage to come clean.
